The Mendocino Study Club was founded in 1908 by ten women eager to learn more about the world beyond the mill towns where they were living. Mendocino had grown up around a lumber mill built out on the rugged headlands in 1852. From the beginning, the Study Club members were concerned about the well-being of their remote Mendocino Coast Community. That “service to the Community” continues today. Membership has expanded to 135 members with focus on their scholarship program (continuing since 1943) and support of the Mendocino Community Library (founded by Study Club in 1947). After a flurry of Centennial projects in 2008, (creating a “Walking Historic Mendocino” Map, linking the five House Museums of the Mendocino Coast, successfully applying for Mendocino to be named a Preserve America Community and many other activities) now, in 2009, members are expanding their participation in Heritage Days events. The Study Club is sponsoring an Exhibit during May at the Mendocino Art Center, “A Variety of Views: the Historic Buildings of Mendocino”. It will feature photos from the 1860s plus other amazing photographic images with their accompanying stories. Funding of the Exhibit is by Harvest at Mendosa’s to honor their Centennial Celebration.
