Point Arena Historical District on the magnificent Mendocino Coast is home to one of the tallest lighthouse towers in the west, the Point Arena Light Station. Dramatically perched on a narrow peninsula, the Point Arena Lighthouse Tower is 115 ft. high. Erected in 1870, destroyed by the 1906 earthquake, and rebuilt the following year, it was the first lighthouse to be made of steel and concrete.
The California Cultural Historic Endowment was a major player in making the recent reconstruction of the lighthouse tower possible, as well as a small grant from Mendocino Community Foundation, and many Matching Funds from years of fundraising through the Save the Light campaign. We wish to thank everyone for the incredible support we have received from all of the small communities of the North Coast.
The lighthouse is now in pristine condition and is now available to the public to climb out onto the balcony/gallery. Over 25,000 visitors have enjoyed the view from the lantern room since the Station reopened to the public in February 2009.
The restored First Order Fresnel Lens is on display in the museum.
